AKM LLP has been rendering professional legal services to the society for 55 years now. At AKM, the founders / partners believe that dissemination of knowledge to a larger audience is key to educating the public and spreading awareness of interpretation, implications and consequence of key laws. The Law Tree online journal was born out of this idea.

From its launch in 2017, to marching towards our golden jubilee edition (and beyond) the intention of everyone at The Law Tree– both individually and as a team has been to share quality knowledge in simple, lucid and illustrative manner. Be it Company law, FEMA, SEBI, RBI and a gamut of other laws, The Law Tree endeavours to bring you the very latest and the best.

At The Law Tree, we take pride in amalgamating law with art! Creative titles / headings covering the latest happenings (which have legal bearing) are depicted using light hearted yet hard hitting colourful illustrations. By doing this, we have been successful in reaching out to a wide spectrum of readers. We believe this gives us an edge over other online legal journals / publications.

Born and raised in an agricultural family, I was (and continue to remain) passionate about farming. My family and friends re-oriented my thinking towards taking up law as a profession. Once I got into law, there was no looking back. It was my true calling.

On the occasion of the Law Tree completing its 50^th edition, the team wanted an insight into the life of our founder Mr. A K Mylsamy. We tossed a few phrases and he was at his candid best.

Childhood

Being born and raised in an agricultural family in Coimbatore, I did my schooling in Coimbatore. I always stood first in class and also managed a double promotion! Though I was not inclined to towards civil services, I was very keen on learning textile technology and take it from there.

Law(yer)

After schooling, I went on to study in Loyola College, Chennai. On the advice and suggestions from family and friends I decided to make a career out of law. Though Im a lawyer by chance, I became passionate about law and have been practicing law since.

First Experience in Court

Timid and nervous in my very first case, I slowly overcame my consciousness through practice. The faith my seniors had in me along with my “never give up” attitude help me transform into a self-confident and well-read lawyer.

The Court Room Scenario - Then and Now

In all my 55 years of practice (and counting), I have been witnessing sea of change in the legal profession. While there are quality lawyers who practice with a high standard of professional ethics and sound legal knowledge, it is concerning that the latest entrants seem to be out to make a quick buck and focus less on learning or ethics.

Daily Routine

A firm believer of “early to bed and early to rise”. If that is in place, then there is no stopping you!
I go to bed around 8:30-9pm and wake up around 3:45am. I go to the beach for a walk with my dog and come back to get ready for work.

I’ve had the privilege of giving birth – first, to my beautiful daughter Sahana and then to my brain child “The Law Tree”. Having majored in fine arts alongside being a qualified lawyer, my idea was to integrate law and creativity and create a newsletter which was totally away from the run of the mill legal newsletters. It was important to break the monotony and come up with something novel. Thinking out of the box is a common thread between art and law.

The Law tree came into existence to satisfy twin objectives of spreading knowledge of the law amongst professionals / laymen and doing so in simple, artistic, colourful and fun manner.
